President Biden on Sunday appeared to confuse French President Emmanuel Macron with former French president Francois Mitterrand, who died in 1996.
The apparent mix-up occurred during a campaign event Sunday in Las Vegas, where Biden spoke at length about the Group of Seven (G7) meeting he attended after his 2020 election.
Biden said one of his first words during the meeting was “America is back,” prompting a response from “Mitterand” in Germany, which he later corrected to “from France.”
“And Mitterrand from Germany, Mitterrand from France, looked at me and said… ‘Look, what… why… how long are you coming back?'” Biden said. “And I looked at him… The German Chancellor said: “Mr President, what would you say if you picked up the London Times tomorrow? And what would you say if the London Times said, “A thousand people stormed the House of Commons”” Commons , Break Down the Door, two Bobbys are killed to prevent the election of the Prime Minister. ” What would you say? ‘”
White House I then posted a commentMitterrand’s name was withdrawn and replaced by Macron.
Biden’s comments followed his criticism of former President Donald Trump and recent “blood poison” remarks he used to describe the impact of the influx of immigrants into the United States.
The Hill has reached out to the White House for further comment.
Since taking office in 2021, Biden has faced continued scrutiny over his age and ability to serve a second term. Several of his political opponents and some voters have used Mr. Biden’s apparent mix-ups and gaffes to further fuel the debate over why. He is either too old or unfit to be president.
At 81 years old, Biden is the oldest sitting US president. If he is re-elected this November, he will be 87 years old at the end of his second term.
Mr. Biden’s political opponent Mr. Trump, 77, also spoke last month about Republican primary challenger Nikki Haley and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) when discussing the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. It appeared to confuse the states) and was subject to similar criticism.
Biden later mocked Trump for the gaffe, writing on former Twitter account X: “I don’t agree with Nikki Haley on everything, but I agree with her on this one. She’s Nancy. “Not Pelosi,” he wrote. The post was accompanied by a campaign ad accusing Trump of the mix-up and highlighting concerns about his mental health.
