President Biden's reelection campaign raised more than $1 million in online fundraising alone in the 24 hours after the president's memorial service on Jan. 6, according to numbers provided exclusively to The Hill.
Biden on Friday launched a sweeping attack on his likely Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, warning Americans that Trump's re-election poses a threat to American democracy. The president focused on January 6, the third anniversary of the Capitol riot, and insisted in his remarks that democracy will be on the ballot in 2024.
In response to the 24-hour fundraising campaign, the Biden campaign noted that it sees preserving democracy as a political winner for the president in 2024.
“In election after election, democracy and freedom are mobilizing the issues of the American people. 2024 will be no different, and we are encouraged by the strong grassroots enthusiasm seen around the core messages of the president's campaign. is encouraging,” Biden campaign deputy manager Rob Flaherty told The Hill.
The speech, Biden's first major general election speech, was delivered near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, an important symbol of the American Revolution. He focused on Trump, at one point calling him a “loser” and stressing that he is betting on a rematch with Trump in November.
Trump responded to the speech by accusing Biden of “fear-mongering” and suggesting he was attacking Biden only on the issue of democracy, since the president cannot run on other issues. .
