Iran continues to promise retaliation for the attack on the consulate, and tensions appeared to escalate further on Saturday when Revolutionary Guard troops seized the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries. Iranian authorities claimed the ship was owned by Israelis, but the United States disputed this, saying it belonged to a British company.

NSC spokesperson Adrian Watson said in a statement that “we strongly condemn Iran’s seizure of the Portuguese-flagged, British-owned MSC AIRES in international waters,” but Iran offered no explanation for the seizure. “The crew consists of Indians, Filipinos, Pakistanis, Russians and Estonians.”

“We call on Iran to immediately release the ship and its international crew,” Watson insisted. “Seizing a civilian vessel without provocation is a blatant violation of international law and an act of piracy by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a designated foreign terrorist organization.”
