President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will announce executive gun control measures on Thursday, including $153 million in funding for states to enact and enforce red flag laws.
The Department of Justice announces more than $135 million in awards to 48 states under the Burn State Crisis Intervention Program (Burn SCIP). This program funds the implementation of the Extreme Risk Protection Order (“Red Flag'') program, State Crisis Intervention. Court proceedings and related programs/initiatives.
The White House did not say whether it intended to point out that Biden and Harris have been unable to stop mass killings and large-scale public attacks in states with red flag laws.
California, for example, adopted a red flag law in 2016, but the state led the nation in “active shooters” in both 2021 and 2023.
Florida adopted a red flag law in response to the Parkland High School shooting on February 14, 2018, but the law is still in place. Couldn't prevent it In January 2019, an assailant opened fire inside a restricted area in Sebring, Florida, killing five people.
Red flag laws expand the ability for law enforcement to take away a person's firearms in criminal forfeiture scenarios based on testimony from family members, neighbors, coworkers, spouses, and/or ex-spouses.
Harris supports pre-crime forfeiture laws.
