President Joe Biden reportedly only used the “Bidenomics” slogan three times in 2024 after Republicans successfully redefined it with negative connotations.
By contrast, Biden reportedly used the term 100 times in 2023.
Biden aides initially adopted the term to make it easier for voters to identify Biden’s economic policies and alleged successes. But as data continued to show that prices rose across the board and remained about 20% higher under Biden’s administration, Republicans effectively hijacked the term, calling it Biden’s failed economy. It was changed into a slogan to express the policy.
In March alone, Republicans used “Bidenomics” nearly 500 times, Axios report Wednesday. Democrats, by contrast, have essentially abandoned it. “This is a change that amounts to an admission that the White House’s messaging efforts have not found support with many voters,” the newspaper reported.
Despite the changes, the White House said it would “continue to talk about Bidennomics.”
“[Biden] White House Press Secretary Michael Kikukawa will continue to talk to Axios about Bidennomics, which is in sharp contrast to congressional Republicans who side with special interests and the wealthy over the middle class. “There is,” he said.
Polls show that Biden’s economic downturn remains a top priority for voters. In a YouGov poll last week, Americans cited inflation and rising prices (21%), illegal and legal immigration (16%), and jobs and the economy (9%) as their top three issues.
Biden’s approval rating is below 50% on the three issues of greatest concern.
- Inflation/Prices: 32% support – 61% disapprove
- Immigration: 30% approve – 59% disapprove
- Employment and the economy: 41% approve – 51% disapprove
Overall, just 40% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance, well below the 50% threshold historically required for incumbents to win re-election.
