Biden signs Social Security bill, says American retirees deserve ‘economic security and dignity’

President Biden on Sunday signed a Social Security bill that repeals two statues that have long cut pay for public sector workers such as firefighters and teachers.

“The bill I'm signing today is about a simple proposal,” Biden said before signing the Social Security Fairness Act. “Americans who have worked hard all their lives to earn an honest living should be able to retire with financial security and dignity.”

Late last month, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the Social Security Fairness Act by a 76-20 margin. Last month, the bill passed the House by a vote of 327-75.

The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), one of the laws repealed by the Social Security Fairness Act, was enacted in 1983 to reduce Social Security benefits for workers who receive public pensions that are not covered by Social Security.

The Social Security Fairness Act also eliminates the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which was enacted in 1977 and reduced benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers receiving public sector pensions.
