Biden to Announce U.S. Will Build Port in Gaza for Aid Imports

President Joe Biden will use his State of the Union address to announce that the U.S. military will build a port on the Mediterranean coast of Gaza to help import humanitarian supplies by large ships, the White House announced Thursday.

The revelation was made during a later White House call to reporters “behind the scenes.” published On its website:

And importantly, in his speech tonight, the president will direct the U.S. military to lead an emergency mission to build a port on the Mediterranean coast of Gaza that can host large ships carrying food, water, medicine, and temporary supplies. To give instructions is to announce. Shelter. And this is an effort that begins here when the president announces and issues his orders. And we wanted to preview it during the call and answer any questions our customers may have.

Initially, our military will lead this effort, but over time we expect the port to transition into a commercially operated facility.

White House officials on the call acknowledged that “land transport is the most efficient and cost-effective way to get aid,” and that distributing aid within Gaza is an additional challenge. Ta.

Officials were also unsure whether U.S. troops would be sent. “We are not planning on this being an operation that requires U.S. ground operations,” one official said, but the U.S. military has previously said such an initiative would require 2,000 troops. He said it would be.

“[T]”The president has instructed us to consider all options and not wait for the Israelis to attack,” one of the officials said.

Officials said planning and implementation of the Gaza port would take “several weeks”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it would only take “a few weeks” to win the war if Israel entered Rafah, Hamas’ last stronghold.

Gaza had a small port, but it was destroyed during the war. Hamas used it in the October 7 terrorist attack.

Israeli soldiers look out over Gaza’s main port during fighting that destroyed much of the port in November 2023. Hamas controlled the port and used it to launch a maritime attack against Israel on October 7. (IDF)

Israel has repeatedly explained that there is no limit to the amount of aid that can enter Gaza and that the limiting factor is the UN’s inability to distribute aid, and that most of the aid is stolen by Hamas terrorists. I’ve been doing it.

It is not clear whether the administration is cooperating with Israel, but Israel has said it is open to the idea of shipping aid by sea. Israel had previously thwarted a platoon that attempted a blockade to prevent Hamas arms imports.

Critics say a quicker way to move aid through the Gaza Strip would be to allow Israel to defeat Hamas and then use groups other than the terrorism-linked United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The aim is to move aid supplies through the Gaza Strip.

Biden faces opposition within the Democratic Party from Muslim and Arab American voters who believe the administration should not arm Israel or defend its right to attack Hamas terrorists who started the war. ing. Many of these voters live in Michigan, Pennsylvania and other battleground states important to Biden’s re-election campaign.
