President Joe Biden called on Congress to ban bump stocks just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the ATF’s ban on firearm accessories.
Biden did this through his posts on X. He wrote“Today’s Supreme Court decision strikes down important gun safety regulations. We know that prayers and thoughts are not enough. I call on Congress to take action to ban bump stocks, pass assault weapons ban legislation and save lives. Send me a bill and I will sign it right away.”
Attached to X’s post was a longer statement from Biden, which read in part:
Despite this decision, my Administration will continue to act. I stood up to the NRA and signed the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun violence reduction bill passed by Congress in nearly 30 years. My Administration has established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, made historic investments in mental health to support people in times of crisis, and expanded background checks to keep guns out of the wrong hands.
He ended his statement by calling for stricter gun control.
Biden’s ATF has been active in pushing for gun control measures during his time in office, but at least three restrictions have hit the justice system in the past week.
On June 12, 2024, Breitbart News reported that Gun Owners of America had obtained a preliminary injunction against the ATF background check rule. And on June 13, 2024, Breitbart News noted that the Firearms Policy Coalition had succeeded in striking down the ATF’s universal background check rule.

The decision to strike down the universal background check rule can be appealed, but if appealed, it would likely end up before the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not been particularly receptive to ATF’s attempts to control guns.
Most recently, on June 14, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the ATF’s bump stock ban.
