Biden’s Cabinet condemns attempted assassination of former President Trump

Amid a climate of incendiary political rhetoric this election season, President Biden and White House officials have explicitly condemned political violence following the assassination attempt on former President Trump over the weekend, with many also expressing sympathy for Trump and condolences to the families of those killed during the attack.

“Assassination attempts have no place in our country,” Vice President Harris wrote to X, adding that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were praying for the family of the victim, identified as former fire chief Corey Comperatore.

“As @POTUS said, we must work towards unity as Americans. Assassination attempts have no place in our country – or anywhere. Doug and I are praying for the families of the victims who were senselessly killed yesterday and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also condemned “political violence in America.”

“We are shocked and saddened by the shooting at former President Trump’s rally, but are grateful that he is safe. president “There is no place for political violence in America, and we must all condemn it,” Blinken wrote in a post on X on Saturday night.

“The entire Department of Defense condemns this violence, which has no place in our democracy,” Austin said.

“This is not and should never be the way to resolve differences in America. I am relieved to hear that former President Trump is safe and I am praying for him, his family and all those affected by this horrific incident,” he said.

Garland was charged with contempt of Congress by House Republicans this year over the audio recordings of Biden and Harr. Long statement On Sunday, he offered condolences to the victim’s family and thanked the police officers who responded to the assassination attempt.

“I want to emphasize again that the violence we saw yesterday is an attack on our very democracy,” Garland said. “The Department of Justice will not tolerate this kind of violence, and as Americans, we cannot tolerate this kind of violence. This must stop.”

Becerra, who had previously filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump violated the Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy and Conservation Act while in office, said he was “relieved” to hear that Trump was safe.

“Political violence will never be tolerated. While we need to learn more about what happened, there is no escaping the fact that gun violence is an urgent public health crisis in this country,” Becerra wrote on X.

Buttigieg, a longtime and vocal critic of Trump, called the incident a “scary moment” and said he was “encouraged” that Trump was doing well.

“Today, the entire nation must speak with one voice in total and unequivocally rejecting all political violence,” he wrote to X.

Other Cabinet members who offered condolences included Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

“My prayers go out to all of the victims injured and killed in yesterday’s attack, and to those traumatized by the violence. Actions like this have no place at our political rallies or anywhere else in our country,” Vilsack wrote.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this act of violence and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today,” Mayorkas, who is also the subject of an impeachment inquiry by House Republicans, wrote on X. “We are working with President Biden, former President Trump and their campaigns to take every possible step to ensure their safety and security.”

He added that ensuring the safety of presidential candidates was one of the department’s “key priorities.”

The comments came just days before the Republican National Convention is scheduled to begin in Milwaukee on Monday, where delegates will formally elect Trump as the GOP’s presidential nominee. Biden said early Sunday that he had instructed the Secret Service to thoroughly review all security measures before the start of the convention, but the agency said it would not change current procedures for the week-long event.
