NEA Criticizes Supreme Court Ruling on Education Department
The president of the National Education Association, the largest teachers’ union in the U.S., expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling permitting the Trump administration to dismantle the Department of Education.
She remarked, “Anyone invested in American students and public schools should welcome the Supreme Court’s prompt involvement in this matter, which upholds the preliminary relief set by the lower court. However, today’s ruling doesn’t address the core issues regarding Trump’s unlawful attempts to eliminate the Department of Education.”
Furthermore, she emphasized, “Parents, educators, and community members will not remain quiet as Trump and his supporters threaten the future of public schools—impacting students in rural, suburban, and urban areas.”
The Supreme Court’s decision highlighted the process for the Trump administration to terminate numerous Department of Education positions. The ruling, split 6-3 along ideological lines, temporarily halts a lower court order that had reinstated about 1,400 employees.
Earlier this year, Education Secretary Linda McMahon dismissed half of the Department’s staff as part of broader government reductions. Shortly after, Trump announced plans to completely shut down the department via an executive order.
The Supreme Court’s ruling arises from two lawsuits, including one initiated by 20 states led by Democrats, contesting layoffs and prospective shutdowns in the education sector.
McMahon welcomed the ruling, asserting that federal agencies should “enhance efficiency and accountability while significantly reducing education funding to states.” She further stated, “Today’s Supreme Court decision reinforces a fundamental truth: the U.S. President holds ultimate authority over staffing, organizational structure, and daily operations of federal agencies, as granted by the Constitution.”
