Bill Belichick has 1 word to describe why it’s difficult to lure free agents to Patriots

Bill Belichick has done everything he can to win six Super Bowl championships during his illustrious career with the New England Patriots.

Building teams through trades and the draft has always been Belichick's specialty: He drafted Richard Seymour, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, got the most out of Troy Brown and Ty Law during his tenure and traded for Randy Moss, resurrecting his career.

When the Patriots were active in free agency, they were able to sign players like Cam Newton, Darrelle Revis, Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau. But as Belichick's career progressed, it became harder to sign free agents. New head coach Jerrod Mayo learned that lesson when he missed out on DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley during his first year as the team's head coach.

Belichick blamed the high income tax in Massachusetts.

“Those are the Taxachettes,” Belichick said Monday during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “Almost every player, whether they're a practice squad player or a minimum-salary player, is pretty close to $1 million in salary. Once you hit that $1 million threshold, you're paying additional state taxes in Massachusetts.”

“There's no one alive who could be a better GM for the Cowboys than me,” Jerry Jones said. “I've done everything since Sunday.”

“You have to deal with different issues in negotiations there. It's not like Tennessee or Florida or Nevada. Some of those teams don't have a state income tax. It makes it a lot tougher when it comes to agents.”

The Patriots' lackluster season since Brady's departure has also hindered their brilliance.

The team has only made the playoffs once and has started four quarterbacks since the start of the 2020 season, with a fifth likely to be any of Drake Maye, Joe Milton or Jacoby Brissett in the starter in Week 1 this season.
