Clinton Defends Biden Amid Health Concerns
Former President Bill Clinton made an appearance on “The View” Thursday, expressing support for former President Joe Biden in light of recent narratives surrounding Biden’s health issues at the White House.
Clinton emphasized that he had never witnessed any deterioration in Biden’s physical or cognitive abilities during their encounters. He criticized former Biden staff for allowing travel abroad just before the important June 27 debate. “From what I observed, Biden’s mind was clear, his judgment sound, and he was managing his challenges well,” Clinton noted. He found it puzzling that, at 80 years old, Biden was permitted to make such trips. “There are many questions I can’t answer. What’s essential, perhaps, is to focus less on the past and more on the future.”
He went on to mention that the experience of a president facing cognitive challenges is not entirely new, referencing past leaders like Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson, who both dealt with significant health issues while in office.
Clinton’s commentary followed several reports detailing concerns from CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson, as well as reflections from Clinton’s own book, “Original Sin.” He shared that his impressions of Biden, gained from a recent meeting, were generally positive, though he noted that certain publications didn’t fully resonate with him.
Biden’s officials and fellow Democrats have reportedly noted his declining health but have been hesitant to publicly acknowledge these issues for fear of impacting his re-election campaign. Staff members have taken steps to minimize Biden’s public exposure, leading to fewer press conferences than during Reagan’s presidency.
Following another fall in June 2023, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s personal physician, indicated that further falls could necessitate the use of a wheelchair. His team has made adjustments, including optimizing his footwear and ensuring safer pathways, to prevent future incidents.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the stress of the presidency on Biden’s health, with recommendations for additional rest time in his schedule. Reports suggest that Biden has not followed through on these suggestions, and noteworthy personalities like actor George Clooney, who is fundraising for Biden’s June 2024 campaign, have been unsettled by the president’s condition.
Despite these growing concerns, many Democrats, White House officials, and the media were somewhat skeptical of Biden’s health issues until the recent debate. At that point, some Congressional Democrats even began urging him to reconsider his candidacy.
