Trump explains how his perfectionist drive helps clean up crime
President Donald Trump recently shared insights on how his perfectionist tendencies influence his vision for restoring law and order in Washington, D.C. During an interview with Trey Gowdy on ‘Sunday Night in America,’ he outlined his strategy to address crime by focusing on the small fraction of habitual offenders. Trump also pointed to the accomplishments related to improving safety in the nation’s capital and expressed his intentions to aid other large cities in similar efforts.
In a humorous twist, comedian Bill Maher commended Trump’s approach to crime during a recent episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” suggesting that the president’s tough-guy image might have contributed to a decrease in violent crime across the country. Maher remarked that it’s not just drug-related offenses that are down; overall crime rates have seen reductions as well. He noted that this decline could be attributed to various factors, rather than strictly political ones, like the pervasive surveillance in modern America.
Maher referred to Trump as a “bad a–,” arguing against the idea that the president’s hardline stance on crime hasn’t made a difference. He acknowledged the impact of both Democratic policies and Trump’s measures in achieving lower crime statistics nationwide.
While Maher doesn’t fully agree with all of Trump’s methods, he recognizes that the president’s firm approach has yielded tangible results. He humorously acknowledged that having a president with a ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’ attitude must have some effect on crime rates.
The FBI’s recent data revealed a notable 9% decline in violent crime from June 2025 to May 2026, with robbery seeing the steepest drop at 19.4%, followed by lower rates of murder, rape, and aggravated assault. Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack emphasized the possibility for bipartisan collaboration on crime issues, despite political disagreements on other matters.
Pack noted that acknowledging effective measures doesn’t necessarily align someone with a political campaign. Moreover, he advocated for teamwork among local, state, and federal law enforcement to significantly impact crime reduction across the country. He expressed that, ultimately, most people desire the same outcomes—safety in their neighborhoods, regardless of their political views.
The White House has also highlighted the crime rate drop, asserting that Trump has succeeded in fulfilling his promise to enhance public safety. A spokesperson claimed that Trump has achieved the largest decrease in violent crime in U.S. history, while affirming his unwavering support for law enforcement compared to alternative, less supportive policies.
