Bison falls into Grand Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone National Park and dies

On June 21st, visitors at Yellowstone National Park experienced a tragic event when a bison fell into the water near Grump Rhythm Springs in the Midway Geyser Basin, close to Old Faithful. Eyewitnesses reported that the bison initially took a few cautious steps into the shallow area before backing away. However, it soon found itself in deeper water where it became trapped.

A witness shared their experience on social media, noting that despite making an effort to escape, the bison was unable to free itself. According to a report, one person observed, “It was as difficult as it tried, it couldn’t come out.” People were understandably upset by the scene.

Michael Poland, a scientist from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, remarked that while such incidents are uncommon, it’s not unheard of for animals to fall into hot springs. He mentioned that a previous investigation had uncovered a bison skeleton in the park’s hot springs, suggesting these occurrences might happen “very fast.”

Poland explained that the unfortunate animal’s remains were effectively being consumed by the nearly boiling water, highlighting the harsh conditions of the environment. “This bison corpse is basically sitting in a pool of almost boiling water,” he stated. Notably, Grump Rhythm Spring can reach temperatures of up to 192 degrees Fahrenheit, making it dangerous for unwitting wildlife.
