Bison Attacks Man in Yellowstone, Injuring Him Severely
A large bull bison in Yellowstone National Park launched an elderly man eight feet into the air, causing multiple fractures. Thankfully, park officials confirmed the bison will not be put down.
According to statements made to TMZ, Yellowstone staff declared, “No control measures will be taken” regarding the bison involved in the attack on 65-year-old Carl Isom McDaniel, which occurred on Friday night.
McDaniel was camping with his 13-year-old grandson near Bridge Bay Campground by Yellowstone Lake when the bison charged at him.
The stunning moment, where McDaniel was thrown nearly eight feet high, was captured by a fellow park visitor who happened to be taking photographs.
The retiree from Kendall, Washington, suffered a four-part fracture in his femur, one of the strongest bones in the human body, necessitating surgery the following Sunday.
However, in a positive turn of events, McDaniel shared he was up and standing the day after the surgery, expressing his gratitude on Facebook with a thumbs up emoji.
In an interesting note, McDaniel also commended the massive 2,200-pound bison for sparing his life during the incident.
“He was right on top of me when I fell, and I couldn’t move,” he recounted. “He could have done so much worse to me.”
Mike McLeod, a professional photographer who recorded the event, remarked that McDaniel was surprisingly upbeat after the attack. He shared that McDaniel worried others might think he had provoked the animal.
“He was joking through the pain,” McLeod noted about McDaniel’s demeanor, adding that he wanted to ensure the video revealed he hadn’t done anything to instigate the bison’s attack.
According to McLeod, both McDaniel and his grandson had not provoked the bison but were merely unfortunate to be in its way during the assault.
The local newspaper reached out to Yellowstone National Park officials for a response, but none was immediately available.
