Blast at Palm Springs fertility center shakes California desert town

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — An explosion rattled neighborhoods in Palm Springs on Saturday, causing damage to a fertility clinic.

The incident is under investigation as a potential vehicle explosion. Officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated that at least one person may have died, but additional details about the motives remain undisclosed.

The explosion was reported around 11 a.m. local time, prompting the city to ask residents to steer clear of the area around North India Canyon Drive and East Tacheva Drive.

Authorities, including investigators from various agencies, have arrived at the scene to gather information.

Dr. Maha Abdallah, who leads the fertility clinic involved, confirmed in a phone interview that all staff members were safe. Thankfully, the IVF lab and all stored embryos were not affected, although the clinic’s office space suffered damage.

“I really have no clue what happened,” Abdallah remarked, expressing relief that the incident occurred when there were no patients present.

Nima Tabrizi, a 37-year-old from Santa Monica, recounted feeling the blast while inside a nearby cannabis clinic. “The building just shook. We went outside and the clouds were getting bigger,” he said. “It felt like a bomb went off. … We went to the scene and saw a human body.”

Palm Springs is a desert community about two hours east of Los Angeles, recognized for its luxury resorts and ties to notable residents.
