Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez exits game after seeming to be struck by a ball thrown from the stands

Baseball Injuries from Unlikely Sources

There are numerous ways a baseball player can end up injured, but one of the more unusual scenarios involves being struck by a ball thrown from the stands.

In a recent game at Camden Yards, Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jesus Sanchez found himself in just such a situation. He was ejected during the sixth inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles, which the Blue Jays were leading 6-0 at the time. The incident occurred as Sanchez was standing in right field during a mound visit.

Initially, it appeared to be quite a severe incident. While seemingly engaged in conversation with a fan over the wall, Sanchez turned around and was unexpectedly hit near his right wrist by what appeared to be a baseball, causing confusion for the audience watching on Peacock.

Jim Palmer, a commentator, voiced his shock, jokingly suggesting he would collect fingerprints from the fan responsible. It’s a fair reaction, honestly; you wouldn’t expect a ball to come flying from the stands and hit a player.

However, upon closer inspection, it seems that there’s more to the story. Observers in the right field section described the incident as accidental. A 13-year-old fan noted that Sanchez seemed to be gesturing with his glove, suggesting he was open to catching a ball. The fan, perhaps too eager, delayed throwing the ball until Sanchez had turned away.

It’s important to distinguish between a malicious act and an enthusiastic fan misjudging the moment. This isn’t the first time players have interacted with fans in fun ways. Back in 2012, former Tampa Bay Rays player Elliott Johnson famously tossed a ball with a fan who reached out over Twitter. Those moments are delightful reminders of how baseball can create joyful interactions, though this particular instance wasn’t quite as heartwarming.

The Orioles addressed the situation by identifying and removing the fan involved as they conducted an investigation, which, in retrospect, is something that had to be done. Even if it was indeed an accident, ensuring Sanchez’s well-being was crucial.

After the incident, Sanchez left the game with a performance of 2-for-1 at bat, and Johendrik Pinyango took over his position in right field. Good news followed, as the Blue Jays later reported that Sanchez suffered a contusion on his wrist, but precautionary X-rays showed no serious damage.

This incident will likely remain a noteworthy memory for fans. And perhaps a lesson: if you think a major leaguer is up for a game of catch, maybe wait until you’re certain they’re paying attention.
