Even as egg prices continue to rise, nearly all eggs sold in Michigan before the new year must come from cage-free birds.
Michigan lawmakers amended the Animal Industry Act in 2019 to require shell-less eggs from chickens, ducks, and other poultry sold in the state to come from cage-free rearing systems starting December 31, 2024. It was compulsory to do so.
However, the new law does not apply to the sale of shell eggs produced on farms with fewer than 3,000 laying hens, nor does it apply to liquid or cooked eggs.
However, for affected farms, the law prohibits business owners from selling eggs from layer hens if standing care cannot be provided within the available floor space for the hens.

The law also states that no chicken may be confined or tethered in a manner that prevents the chicken from lying down, standing up, fully extending its limbs, or turning freely. There is.
Most of the guidelines for cage-free eggs are established in the Egg Producers Federation 2017 Regulations, which set standards for how much area an egg must provide for it to be certified as cage-free. .
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment on the new law.

The news comes as egg prices continue to rise, with industry experts saying the costs will be high, especially if infections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as “avian flu,” continue to rise. The high trend is expected to continue until 2025.
Kevin Bergquist, Wells Fargo Agriculture and Food Research Institute sector manager, said egg prices have been rising since 2023 due to a combination of seasonal price increases during the holidays and disruptions to egg supply due to avian influenza.
Prices over the past year have “generally” been higher than prices in 2023, Bergquist said, and “often exceeded egg prices in 2022 and beyond, when HPAI really took hold of the egg market.”

Wholesale egg prices, which soared nearly 55% in November, do not necessarily reflect consumers' prices for eggs at grocery stores, and prices can fluctuate widely.
Grocery prices rose 0.5% in November, according to the Consumer Price Index, with four of the six major grocery store food groups increasing prices. Eggs showed the largest increase by a wide margin.
