Bob McDermott wins GOP primary to face Mazie Hirono for Senate in Hawaii

Former Hawaii state representative and Marine Corps veteran Bob McDermott won the state’s Republican Senate primary on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

McDermott initially won the Hawaii House race by about 150 votes, according to his campaign website. He was the only candidate promoted on the Senate Republican campaign website.

McDermott had raised just under $2,500 in individual donations as of July, according to campaign finance data, and will go into the general election with about $10 in cash on hand.

The candidates in the crowded, six-candidate primary field ran largely unrefined campaigns compared with the millions of dollars being poured into incumbent Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii).

Hirono was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and is seeking a third term.

The Japanese-born U.S. senator is the favorite to win Hawaii’s general election later this year, but her victory would be welcomed by Democrats as they face an uphill battle to maintain their slim Senate majority.

Her 2024 campaign has raised more than $3 million from individual donations, according to campaign finance data, and she will go into the general election with more than $2.3 million cash on hand.

Prior to being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Hirono served as Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor and served three terms in the House of Representatives before running for the Senate in 2012.

Four states hold key primary elections on Tuesday, setting the stage for November’s Senate and House showdowns.
