Boebert's Halloween outfit making fun of Mexicans and ICE enforcement faces backlash

Denver — Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) is facing backlash on social media due to a Halloween photo showing her wearing a sombrero and holding a sign related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A photo was shared on X, depicting Boebert in a traditional Mexican outfit, holding a sign that reads, “Mexican word of the day: Juicy Tell me… Juicy ice cream is coming,” seemingly making fun of the Spanish pronunciation of “voila.” In the picture, she is smiling alongside someone dressed as an angel, while a man, identified as her boyfriend Kyle Piercy, appears in an ICE agent costume.

A separate photo posted on Facebook shows Boebert in her costume without the sign, indicating she attended a Halloween party at the Grain House in Windsor, Colorado.

“The Latino Caucus found out about this photo on Saturday and our members were outraged,” said Colorado State Sen. Julie Gonzalez, co-chair of the Colorado Democratic Party’s Latino Caucus. “We quickly started discussing how we wanted to respond. Rep. Boebert has chosen to mock our community, take our culture lightly, and make hurtful jokes while allowing Coloradans with lawful immigration status to face issues, including those currently in ICE custody after following the proper legal procedures.”

Nexstar’s KDVR reached out to Boebert regarding the photo.

“This is just a Halloween costume,” Boebert said in a statement. “Tell your senators to vote for CR and open the government. Their decisions are impacting millions of American families.”

Shortly after the photo was shared, it garnered nearly 50,000 likes on X, with a range of comments about her outfit.

One user commented, “This is disgusting.”

In contrast, another posted: “Relax, this is a Halloween costume,” while someone else defended her by saying, “I don’t see anything wrong with her outfit. Stop whining, Democrats.”

Boebert is currently in her third term in the House of Representatives, and she represents Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.
