Bomb squad safely detonates a suspicious device ahead of TPUSA's first event in Utah since Charlie Kirk's assassination

On Tuesday afternoon, “suspicious devices” were detonated by law enforcement at Utah State ahead of the first Turning Point USA event since the assassination of Charlie Kirk. This prompted the agency to implement extra security measures amidst heightened concerns.

The suspicious device was found outside All-Domain, a campus building. Utah State University stated that though it was deemed “non-explosive,” the bomb squad was called in to perform a controlled explosion. A video shared by Fox News captured the moment, with bystanders heard yelling “fire in the hole” just before the loud bang.

Elis Bruch, the university’s public safety executive director, mentioned that staff noticed something unusual under trees near the old main building. A K-9 unit indicated that it could be concerning, which led to the bomb squad’s intervention.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the incident.

The Turning Point USA chapter at Utah State is set to host several prominent figures, including Alex Clark and Sen. Mike Lee, at the event scheduled for Tuesday evening. This occasion marks the first TPUSA event since Kirk’s tragic death at Utah Valley University earlier this month.

  • Tyler Robinson, 22, has been identified as the suspect in Kirk’s assassination, charged with aggravated murder and related offenses.
  • Law enforcement reported that Robinson was living with his transgender roommate, which helped in apprehending him.
  • Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot while attending an event for his American comeback tour.
  • Calls for the death penalty for Robinson have come from various figures, including President Trump.
  • Kirk’s funeral is scheduled for September 21st at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, attended by many, including the Vice President.
  • He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Robinson faces serious charges, including aggravated murder and firearm-related offenses.

As for safety, Utah State University has stated that security protocols for TPUSA events will mimic those used at athletic events to ensure the well-being of everyone involved.

  • All attendees will be screened through magnetometers. Those carrying firearms must have valid Utah concealed carry permits.
  • Backpacks larger than 6.5 x 4.5 inches are not allowed, and only small wallet clutches measuring 4.5 inches are acceptable.
  • No external signs are permitted, and there will be no re-entry once inside.

The university emphasized their ongoing collaboration with safety partners to ensure appropriate measures are in place given the rising concerns.
