Public Safety Concerns Raised After CBP Agent Shooting in Minneapolis

Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed on Saturday that sanctuary policies, along with negative remarks about federal agents, are compromising public safety. She shared these thoughts during a live interview with Aisha Husney from Fox News, shortly after it was reported that a Border Patrol agent shot a man during a raid in south Minneapolis.

Following the incident, protests erupted, and crowd control measures were implemented as demonstrators gathered near the scene. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that agents were pursuing an undocumented immigrant suspected of violent assault when one of the officers approached a man with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino explained that efforts were made to disarm the individual, but he responded violently. “Fearing for his life and the life and safety of his fellow officers, the Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots,” Bovino remarked. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, reportedly holding two loaded magazines and lacking identification.

Bondi attributed the unrest to the city’s political leadership, highlighting that Minneapolis has been declared a sanctuary city by both the mayor and governor. “We invited you here. We will protect you,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of ICE operations in the city to arrest individuals accused of serious crimes for community safety.

Additionally, Bondi described the protests as “very organized,” noting the uniformity of signs and the presence of gas masks among demonstrators. “It’s very organized. How did these people get gas masks?” she questioned.

She confirmed that federal grand jury subpoenas have been issued to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, but she refrained from discussing details of the ongoing investigation. Bondi mentioned that a letter had been sent to Walz, indicating that the federal government might intervene if local officials do not support federal law enforcement efforts.

Bondi reiterated that multiple federal agencies are assisting the DHS, emphasizing the protection of law enforcement officers and the public as a priority. “We’re going to support the greats in law enforcement,” she concluded. The investigation into the shooting and the resulting rioting is still ongoing.
