Bonnie Tyler Has Passed Away at 75

Bonnie Tyler, known for her iconic hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that she passed away unexpectedly last night in a hospital in Portugal due to a condition she was being treated for,” a spokesperson shared in a statement.

Further details are expected soon, but the family has requested privacy as they process this tragic loss.

Just a few days prior, it was reported that Tyler had been placed in a medically induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery.

“Bonnie has been induced into a coma by doctors to assist with her recovery. We appreciate everyone’s well wishes and ask for privacy during this challenging period,” her manager noted in a statement.

Before that, on May 6, it was disclosed that the three-time Grammy nominee was hospitalized in Portugal for emergency treatment.

“It is with great regret that we announce Bonnie has undergone successful intestinal surgery and is currently in recovery,” a post on her official social media indicated.

Her family, friends, and fans were anxious about her condition, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Tyler initially went to the hospital on April 30. According to reports, a European tour was planned for 2026, beginning on May 22 in Malta.

Earlier this year, she mentioned how she maintained her passion for performing, despite health challenges. “I’m healthy enough at the moment, touching wood, and I’m having a lot of fun putting on shows,” she expressed in an interview. “As long as I’m healthy, I can have it all.”

Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skeven, County Neath, Wales. She began her career as a backup singer in the early ’70s before making a name for herself as a solo artist.

Her rise to fame came with the release of her debut album, *The World Starts Tonight*, in 1977, featuring hits such as “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache.” Interestingly, the distinctive quality of her voice was a result of surgery she had on her vocal cords, which unexpectedly gave her a huskier tone—something that worked in her favor when recording her first hit in America.

In the 1980s, she collaborated with songwriter Jim Steinman, leading to her biggest success, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which skyrocketed her to international fame.

“I still get excited when I hear that song on the radio,” she remarked in a recent interview, noting how every solar eclipse brings a resurgence of interest in her timeless hit.

Her career spanned five decades, during which she released 18 studio albums, with the latest being *The Best Is Yet to Come* in 2021.

Tyler is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert Sullivan.
