Border Patrol Agents Rescue Injured Cyclist in California Canyon

U.S. Border Patrol agents recently came to the aid of an injured cyclist who had fallen over 50 feet in a remote canyon in California. The incident took place near Sweet Water Dam, adjacent to Otai Lake County Park in Chula Vista, where agents responded to cries for help from the canyon.

In a statement, Chief Agent Jeffrey Starnaker expressed his gratitude for the agents’ timely intervention. “There is no doubt in my heart that these agents saved this man’s life,” he said. The cyclist, who suffered multiple serious injuries, was unable to move for several hours until he was located by one of the agents.

Rescue operations were captured on the agents’ body cameras, showing one asking the cyclist whether he had lost consciousness. The cyclist, in clear distress, responded no but was visibly bleeding from both legs. The agents immediately took action to stabilize his condition by applying splints and bandages.

According to reports, the cyclist had fallen while walking his bike along the canyon trails, stating that he “lost scaffolding” before plunging into the canyon’s depths. Additional agents, including emergency medical technicians, quickly arrived to assist.

After the cyclist was stabilized, he was airlifted to a local hospital by a San Diego fire helicopter for treatment. The next day, a Border Patrol agent returned to the scene to retrieve the cyclist’s bike and personal belongings, delivering them to his wife.

This incident underscores the ongoing vigilance of the Border Patrol, which maintains a strong presence to prevent illegal activities along the borders while also being prepared to assist those in need.
