Brady Tkachuk Comments on USA Hockey and Trump’s Remarks
Brady Tkachuk, back with the Ottawa Senators, addressed the buzz surrounding a moment when Team USA laughed at a joke made by President Donald Trump about the women’s ice hockey team after both teams clinched gold in Milan.
Players, like Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman, acknowledged that the reaction from players could have been better. When asked about Trump’s comment suggesting he would invite the women’s team to the State of the Union, Tkachuk remarked that otherwise, “he would probably be impeached.” He expressed understanding of the women’s team’s frustration but emphasized that they focus on what they can control. “You can’t control others’ words,” he said, insisting, “We supported them, and they supported us.”
Reflecting on his time in Milan, Tkachuk shared that it was enjoyable to watch the women’s team in action. “They really were the best team in the tournament,” he noted. He described the interaction between the teams as enjoyable, filled with shared experiences and insights.
When further queried about the president’s jokes, Tkachuk maintained his stance. “It was just a quick moment,” he said. “Talking to the president right after achieving your dream—it’s surreal.” He attended the State of the Union with his teammates and noted the standing ovation the team received as they displayed their gold medals.
Interestingly, the women’s team chose not to visit Washington, citing prior commitments. Trump had mentioned during his address that a team of women would visit the White House sometime soon.
A spokesperson from USA Hockey commented on the potential White House visit, saying, “Our players are focused on their current season.” While they are honored by the invitation, a visit would depend on their schedules post-season.
Public opinion appears mixed on social media regarding the matter. However, Ellen Hughes, mother of Jack and Quinn Hughes, emphasized that the unity showcased by both teams is what truly matters. “They care about humanity, unity, and being part of something bigger,” she remarked, highlighting the camaraderie between the men’s and women’s teams during their shared experience.
