Investigation into Chicago Police Response to Immigration Raids Concludes

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson wrapped up an internal inquiry into the involvement of Chicago police during an immigration operation that took place on June 4. The information was shared on Wednesday, highlighting details of the investigation.

Beatrice Ponce de Leon, the vice mayor focused on immigrant rights, led the investigation. The mayor’s office has put forth several recommendations aimed at enhancing the powers of the “Police Accountability Citizens Bureau” (Copa) to examine the city’s “Comfortable City Ordinance.” This ordinance is viewed by critics as a sanctuary policy that guarantees city services to both residents and undocumented immigrants, while also restricting police notifications to ICE.

In a notable remark, the mayor described ICE raids as acts of terrorism, reflecting a sentiment that echoes concerns about the current political climate. He also mentioned a historical perspective, alluding to the belief that “Confederates will win” in the context of today’s America.

Multiple reports indicate that Chicago police are now required to perform their own internal reviews following the investigation’s findings. During the protests against the ICE operations that day, police responded to a 911 call, stating that their primary role was ensuring public safety.

On that same day, the federal government detained ten individuals who had come for their routine immigration check-ins. This prompted several city councillors to respond amid reports of the detentions.

Alderman Anthony Kezada noted, “We observed many community members and families anxiously waiting to learn the status of their detained loved ones.” However, ICE officials clarified that all detainees were under a “final executable order” from an immigration judge for non-compliance.

In the midst of the chaos, three councillors, including Kezada, reportedly sat in protest, blocking the exit to impede the ICE actions. The scrutiny of Mayor Johnson is intensifying, with some local leaders and critics labeling him as possibly the “worst mayor in America,” reflecting a broader discontent with his administration.

During a recent press briefing, Johnson took a strong stance against former President Trump, describing him as a neoconfederate and implying racist undertones in his policies.
