President Trump Blames Illinois Governor for Chicago Crimes
President Donald Trump has taken aim at Illinois Governor JB Pritzker following a violent weekend in Chicago that resulted in numerous shootings and several fatalities. Trump has made offers for federal assistance but expressed confusion over why Pritzker is hesitant to accept help. Kata Truss, Director of the Community Roundtable, is advocating for both the mayor and governor to welcome federal intervention.
Chicago’s mayor faced backlash after emphasizing a state of emergency regarding transgender violence during a particularly violent weekend on June 10, during which multiple shootings occurred and six lives were lost.
Mayor Brandon Johnson stated, “Since declaring a state of transfemicide emergency, our administration has enhanced its support for LGBTQ+ Chicagoans.” He added that this framework focuses on the experiences of TransChicago residents, aiming to create a safer, more connected city.
“Transfemicide” refers to the intentional killing of transgender women driven by transphobic and misogynistic hatred. However, critics quickly highlighted that Johnson appeared more invested in tackling the vague notion of transgender violence than addressing the killings occurring among Black individuals in Chicago.
This weekend’s events, which coincided with celebrations for Juneteenth, were marked by significant violence, with many pointing out that the focus should be on urgent community issues rather than narrower categories of violence. Representative Brandon Gill (R-Texas) criticized the administration’s priorities, asking what exactly a “transfemicide emergency” entails.
One social media user remarked on the sheer number of Black citizens who face violence in the city each month, stating that this is a pressing emergency affecting families in neighborhoods like Roseland and Inglewood. Another comment included, “It’s a tragedy that this is what the mayor is concentrating on.”
Matt Walsh, a conservative commentator, described the term “Transfemicide Emergency” as absurd, sarcastically noting it might be the first type of murder that the mayor disapproves of actively. While Trump has voiced his condemnation of the violence and criticized Pritzker’s leadership, he questioned why the governor hasn’t sought assistance, suggesting that he could transform Chicago into one of the safest cities within a year.
His statements highlighted that his own approach during his presidency had been effective in reducing crime in areas like Washington, D.C., by bringing in additional federal resources. Meanwhile, Johnson’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the ongoing situation.
