XBOX CEO Asha Sharma joins task force addressing H-1B foreign worker issues

Microsoft’s Asha Sharma Appointed to Federal Reserve Task Force Amid Layoff Controversy

The CEO of a well-known U.S. gaming company has been appointed to a high-level task force within the Federal Reserve, despite ongoing backlash against the company’s recent decision to lay off 1,600 workers while planning to bring in thousands of foreign visa employees.

Asha Sharma, who leads Microsoft’s Xbox division, announced the layoffs just earlier this week. Microsoft plans to let go of a total of 4,800 employees, having been approved to hire 2,273 foreign workers on H-1B visas this year, according to data from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

This week, as public outcry over the job cuts intensified, the Federal Reserve proceeded with the appointment of Sharma to a newly created advisory role.

Public Outrage Grows

Sharma will join the Special Committee on Productivity and Employment, working alongside notable figures such as Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, and Stanford economics professor Charles I. Jones.

“The Fed’s commitment to maintaining stable prices and maximizing employment is firm, as is our resolve to fulfill our responsibilities with diligence,” stated new Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh in an official comment.

He added that each task force will evaluate how policymakers’ tools and approaches can be refined. “We are honored that elite talent from different fields will collaborate with us to enhance our performance as an organization,” he continued.

Yet many critics, already enraged at Microsoft and Sharma, expressed further frustration over what they see as the replacement of American workers with foreign staff.

Reports from Microsoft indicate that 740 of this year’s visas were for employees already in the U.S., while the remaining 1,533 were renewals.

Criticism and Contradictions

Online, some have likened Sharma’s appointment to an absurd scenario, like appointing a notorious figure to lead a law enforcement agency. Some commentators questioned if the Federal Reserve is promoting layoffs of American workers in favor of hiring foreign staff.

Moreover, there’s an ongoing discussion surrounding the racial dynamics of the H-1B visa program, given that most visa recipients are of Indian origin. Sharma, who has Indian roots, was born in Wisconsin.

“Remember, when she was promoted to run Xbox, she had zero gaming experience, and now she’s been promoted to an advisory role with the Fed, again with no finance or economics background,” one social media user commented, suggesting that her role could involve replacing American workers with less expensive foreign labor.

The Federal Reserve has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Investigation into Visa Fraud

In a related note, Vice President J.D. Vance recently announced a significant investigation into H-1B visa fraud, indicating that the federal Department of Labor has launched multiple inquiries to address manipulations of the visa program.

He emphasized that American jobs should be prioritized for American workers, not for those looking to exploit the system, and that the Department of Labor is actively addressing these issues.

In response to inquiries, Microsoft clarified that the H-1B figures mentioned include both visa renewals and new roles across the company, indicating that these numbers don’t pertain solely to Xbox and make up only a fraction of Microsoft’s overall workforce. They reiterated that Xbox remains a large employer of American workers in the gaming sector.
