Brave Church Security Team Prevents Mass Shooting at VBS Service in Michigan

On Sunday, the actions of a deacon and security guards potentially thwarted a mass shooting at churches in Michigan. A gunman, equipped with an AR-15 rifle and wearing a tactical vest, was shot outside Crosspoint Community Church. Around 150 attendees were present for worship when the incident unfolded.

According to Bobby Kelly Jr., the Senior Pastor at Crosspointe Community Church, the suspect was confronted before he could enter the church building. This occurred around 11 am local time. The man fired rounds inside, but fortunately, no injuries were reported among the congregation.

The incident happened during the church’s annual Vacation Bible School service, which typically draws larger crowds, particularly children. Videos recorded in the sanctuary captured moments of chaos, with many people scrambling to safety.

“One of our members saw him come into the church and ran away,” Kelly recounted.

A guard sustained a leg injury but is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong praised the quick response of the church staff and security, emphasizing their role in saving lives.

“We are extremely thankful for the brave actions of our church staff. They undoubtedly prevented a larger tragedy,” Strong stated.

The shooter was identified later as Brian Anthony Browning, who had familial ties to the church and had no previous criminal record. Authorities believe he may have been going through a mental health crisis.

Kelly noted that Crosspointe established its security team a decade ago in light of past violence against churches. He expressed concern, mentioning, “We feel like sitting ducks for those who intend to harm us.”

According to a police statement, the security team acted swiftly, managed to confront the suspect, and ultimately engaged him before he could cause further harm.
