Stabbing Incident at Michigan Walmart
This past weekend, a distressing event unfolded in Michigan when a suspect reportedly stabbed 11 individuals inside a Walmart. A confrontation ensued outside the store, where a bystander, carrying a firearm, confronted the suspect.
The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office provided details, indicating that the incident occurred just before 5 PM at a Walmart located in Garfield Township, approximately eight minutes south of Traverse City.
One witness expressed disbelief, saying, “I couldn’t believe it at first. I thought it was probably a terrorist attack.”
According to law enforcement, the assailant used a folding knife during the attacks. By the time deputies arrived on the scene at around 4:46 PM, multiple citizens, some of whom were armed, had already intervened, confronting the suspect in the parking lot. The Sheriff’s Office noted, “The intervention by these citizens led to the suspect being subdued without further incident.”
Another witness, Julia Martell, described the suspect as looking “crazy,” adding that it felt surreal to witness the situation unfold. “All I know is that I saw the knife and I ran away. Now I don’t know where the knife is,” she reflected. “I’m still processing how close it came to being a life-and-death situation.”
Videos from the scene captured brave individuals confronting the assailant, who still brandished his knife. Amidst chants of “Drop the knife! Throw the knife!” the situation escalated quickly.
Stephen Carter, a witness, recalled seeing the suspect stab a man in the throat as he was unloading his truck. “It was shocking. At first, I thought it was a terrorist attack,” he said. Carter also noted that the suspect was finally restrained after someone tackled him.
“It was just amazing, a mix of horror and disbelief,” he shared. “Everything happened so fast, and the suspect was subdued by the time police arrived.”
Another witness, Tiffany Defel, described the moment as terrifying, saying she was caught off guard. “You don’t expect to see something like this in your own neighborhood,” she remarked.
Sheriff Shea praised the brave actions of the citizens and emphasized how quickly the suspect was detained, highlighting that it took less than a minute.
Eleven individuals, with ages ranging from 29 to 84, suffered stab wounds. Among the victims was a Walmart employee. Dr. Tom Sharmerhorn from the medical center indicated that while two victims were in serious condition, others were in fair condition and expected to recover.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gill from Afton, Michigan, has a history of violent incidents and drug-related charges. He is now facing potential terrorist charges along with eleven counts of assault with the intent to kill.
As of now, investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind this shocking attack.
