A Taco Bell worker played a crucial role in preventing a potential mass shooting at a Hindu temple in the Chicago area by reporting a concerning situation involving his coworker to the police.
On October 11, police in Palatine arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis, charging him with a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons, as ABC 7 Chicago detailed. The coworker, who worked with Paporakis at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights, Illinois, stated he had been in communication with Paporakis during a manic episode where the latter sent him a video featuring a rifle and an image of himself in a tactical vest.
According to reports from The Hill, Paporakis also shared a manifesto that included numerous racial and ethnic slurs directed at Jewish individuals, black people, and those of Indian descent. This document, referred to as “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” laid out plans to harm as many Hindus as possible at a local temple in Aurora. The coworker promptly reported these threats to the police, resulting in Paporakis’s arrest at his home.
Upon searching the residence, law enforcement discovered a rifle, several loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and tactical gear, as per reports.
During a news conference, Palatine Police Chief William Nord expressed gratitude for the FBI’s assistance and praised the coworker who reported the alarming information. It’s crucial to highlight how pivotal that initial report was in averting a dangerous situation.
Paporakis’s alleged manifesto contained alarming admissions, including a claim of being a “sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi” who fantasizes about mass murder regularly, as noted by The Hill. His coworkers sensed something was off, particularly when he ominously stated that Sunday would be a “very special day.”
The Palatine Police Department hasn’t commented yet regarding the specifics of the tip-off provided by the vigilant Taco Bell employee who received the troubling video and manifesto.
Former DHS Intelligence Chief John Cohen commented on the situation, noting that individuals planning attacks typically exhibit warning signs both online and offline. He emphasized that had it not been for local law enforcement’s prompt actions, we could have seen yet another tragic mass shooting in the country.
