Friendly Match Ends in Controversy for Brazil
On Tuesday, an impressive 55,144 fans gathered at Fortaleza’s Arena Castellao for a friendly match where Brazil’s women’s national team faced an unexpected upset with a 1-0 loss. To add to the drama, Brazil received a staggering eight red cards during the match.
The first half was intense and physical, yet neither team managed to score. Then, in what proved to be a pivotal moment in the second half, Sophia Wilson’s shot took a deflection off Isabella Chagas of Brazil, resulting in an own goal—the only point in the game.
By the end of the match, Brazil found themselves down to just nine players. Head coach Arthur Elias, along with several staff members and player Bea Zanerat, were sent off after a heated exchange late in the game. Following the final whistle, Tarciane received a red card for elbowing Wilson and kicking two more players, contributing to Brazil’s total of eight send-offs.
The U.S. team found some satisfaction in this victory, having lost their recent two matches against Brazil, the host nation for next year’s Women’s World Cup. U.S. coach Emma Hayes emphasized the need for her players to demonstrate more toughness to overcome Brazil in the second of their two friendly matches this week. Remarkably, in their first encounter just days earlier, Brazil claimed a 2-1 victory.
Despite their struggles, the Americans had slightly better possession, holding onto the ball 55% of the time, although they only managed one shot on goal out of 13 attempts. In contrast, Brazil struggled, with all six of their shots failing to hit the target.
The last 25 minutes were rife with stoppages, largely due to the red cards handed out. Now, the United States will take a hiatus from international play for several months, with their next scheduled match against El Salvador on November 27th as part of the Concaf World Championship, a precursor to the 2027 World Cup.
