Former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile said Sunday that attention will be focused on Democratic delegates ahead of the convention amid growing concerns about President Biden’s age.
Brazile said the electoral votes returned by the party’s delegates would indicate whether there were any serious concerns about Biden’s candidacy.
“The delegates who have broadly supported the president and have pledged their support to him will be submitting their ballots, hopefully within the next week,” she said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
“We probably know better than any pollster, better than any pundit, better than any strategist how the president stands with his delegates,” she added.
A growing number of Democrats are calling for Biden to drop out of the presidential race due to concerns about his age, health and whether he can beat former President Trump in November’s presidential election.
The president has so far strongly rejected the request.
Brazile stressed the importance of the situation to Biden, making clear that the question of whether to continue campaigning is not just about Biden.
“This is a critical time for the country. This is a very tough time for the Democratic Party and probably a sad and difficult time for the Biden family,” Brazile said.
She acknowledged the criticism but endorsed Biden, once again urging party members to stay focused as they vote for the nomination this month.
“We know the stakes are very high. We know what’s at stake,” Brazile continued. “Maintain control of the United States Senate. Maintain control of the United States House of Representatives. But at the same time, we have to reassure the public. And the president has to reassure the public, as well as us in our party. And more importantly, reassure our delegates.”
