Brazilian au pair testifies against ex-lover in murder trial, claims he arranged wife's death by enticing stranger from fetish website.

Murder Trial Begins for Virginia Man

The trial of a Virginia man, accused of planning to murder his wife, kicked off on Tuesday. The testimony came from his former au pair, who stated that another individual was lured to the crime scene via a fetish website.

Brendan Banfield, aged 40, was arrested in September 2024 and is facing charges linked to a spate of murders that took place in February 2023 at his residence in Herndon, located around 20 miles from Washington, D.C.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, along with Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, described the scene as “horrific” when officers responded on February 24, 2023.

Authorities discovered Christine Banfield, aged 37, in an upstairs bedroom with multiple stab wounds. Sadly, she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officers also found Joseph Ryan, aged 39, deceased in his home, suffering from gunshot wounds.

The investigation quickly zeroed in on the Brazilian au pair, Juliana Perez Magalhães, who had been with the family since October 2021. Chief Davis indicated that Brendan and Juliana were romantically involved at the time of the murder.

Magalhães claimed she began a relationship with Christine Banfield in August 2022. Reports suggest that when she inquired about the possibility of a divorce, Brendan expressed concerns over the costs and custody arrangements for the children.

“He discussed plans to eliminate [Christine],” Magalhães reportedly shared with prosecutors, noting that Brendan seemed unsure at first about what action to take.

Additionally, two months before the murder, prosecutors highlighted that Brendan and Juliana visited a shooting range together. On January 28, 2023, Brendan returned to the range to buy a Glock pistol.

Magalhães testified that Brendan instructed her to acquire a new cellphone and Apple ID on the day of the murder, along with directions to park in a different spot.

Prosecutors stated that Brendan had been posing as his wife on the fetish website for about a month, and Ryan was summoned to their home under false pretenses.

During the trial, it was revealed that Ryan, who used the alias “TacoSupreme7000,” believed he was conversing with Christine Banfield. Magalhães read a message to the jury indicating that they had asked Ryan to bring restraints and a knife to their house.

On the day of the incident, it was reported that Christine shouted a warning about Ryan having a knife just before Brendan shot him. The lead prosecutor detailed how Brendan shot Ryan first, then proceeded to stab Christine multiple times.

Juliana Magalhães was arrested in October 2023 in connection to Ryan’s murder. Initially charged with second-degree murder, she later pled guilty to misdemeanor manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing post-Trial.

In a concerning development, Brendan’s 911 call during the incident revealed him identifying himself as a federal agent while reporting the events. He stated, “Someone’s here. I shot him, but he stabbed her. She’s bleeding,” showcasing his panic.

Brendan’s attorney raised questions about Magalhães’ motivations for her plea deal after previously maintaining her innocence. Banfield currently faces charges including aggravated murder, child endangerment, and more. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to life in prison, potentially longer.

As of now, Brendan Banfield has pleaded not guilty, and further developments in the case are eagerly anticipated.
