Immigration officials announced Friday that a Brazilian man convicted of raping a child in his home country and fleeing to the United States was deported in January.

Officers from the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) Boston office deported Edimir Gustavo Eckelberg, 62, on January 26, according to ICE.

“There is no crime more abhorrent or alarming than sexual assault of a child,” said Todd Lyons, ERO Boston Field Director. “Our New England communities are safer without the presence of Edimir Gustavo Eckelberg, who is now in the hands of Brazilian authorities. ERO Boston is committed to removing such violent threats from our New England communities. We will continue to prioritize public safety by capturing and removing them.”

In May 2023, Eckelberg was convicted of raping a child in Brazil.

A court in Florianopolis, Brazil, convicted Eckelberg, but he fled to the United States before sentencing. He entered the United States via New York on a tourist visa in April 2023.

The following month, Brazilian authorities issued a warrant for his arrest for failing to serve a 12-year sentence for a child rape conviction. He was eventually found by authorities and given a notice to appear before an immigration judge. He was detained until he was deported.
