Breeding Place for Predators: Los Angeles County Sues Roblox

Los Angeles County Sues Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns

Los Angeles County has initiated legal proceedings against Roblox, a widely used online gaming platform, claiming that the company hasn’t done enough to shield children from predatory behavior and grooming on its site.

The lawsuit, submitted on Thursday, adds to the mounting legal challenges Roblox faces concerning child safety issues. County officials allege that despite promoting the platform as a safe environment for creativity and interaction, it has failed to maintain that safety.

In the legal documents, officials depict Roblox as a “predator breeding ground,” asserting that children in the area frequently encounter sexually explicit material, exploitation, and grooming on the platform. They contend that the company’s priority seems to be profit rather than the well-being of young users.

Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Roblox, despite public claims of safety, lacks an effective moderation system or adequate age verification measures to safeguard children from harmful content and interactions.

In reaction to rising concerns, Roblox states that it has made efforts to enhance safety measures over the past year. Currently, the platform mandates all users to verify their age using facial estimation technology, aimed at improving access control to age-appropriate content.

However, the lawsuit from Los Angeles County isn’t unique. Roblox is also facing similar legal challenges in several other states, including Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and Kentucky. These cases similarly focus on allegations regarding insufficient protections for young users on the platform.

A Roblox representative provided a statement, expressing strong disagreement with the lawsuit’s claims and emphasizing their commitment to safety.

They noted, “Roblox is built with safety at its core, and we continue to evolve and strengthen our protections every day. We have advanced safeguards in place to monitor harmful content and communications on our platform.” They mentioned that users cannot send or receive images through chats, reducing opportunities for abuse. The spokesperson highlighted that while no system is flawless, their dedication to safety is ongoing and robust, urging parents to visit their Safety Center for more information on how to protect children online.
