British PM faces criticism over blocking legislation banning first-cousin marriage

The former British Conservative Minister and current lawmaker renewed his push in Parliament last week for a law banning marriage, urging opposition from ruling Labour, Prime Minister Kiel Starmer and British Muslim MPs.

Conservative MP Richard Holden said during a parliamentary debate: “The first cousin's marriage has serious health issues, but many of them don't know until after birth.” He added, “When we practice generations after generation, there is an important multiplier effect.”

The adverse health effects of first cousin marriage on children have been established in medical research. Holden added, “The openness of our society and the real impact on women's rights in our country are important. After all, there is an important dynamic in sharing the same set of grandparents.”

Holden urged those wise to “think again” about blocking his laws from moving forward. Starmer responded to Holden, saying, “We took our own stand on the bill, thank you.”

Daily Mail reported A 2024 survey found that almost 46% of women in the Pakistani community in Bradford, England had “common ancestors.” According to a government survey, that number was 62% 10 years ago.

The Prime Minister's Office did not give reasons for opposing the codification of the bill's laws, but a Starmer spokesman told Fox News Digital: The King's Speech After the election, of course, we don't want people to participate in cousin marriage. ”

He continued, “We are focusing on ensuring that every part of the government is focused on focusing on the issues that matter to the British people. We have set legislative priorities in the King's speech.”

Given the massive influx of immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa to Scandinavian countries, the BBC reported that Norway has banned cousins from marriage, but is expected to take effect in Sweden next year.

The failure to codify the ban on inter-institutional marriages between the first cousins has infuriated many prominent conservative voices in the UK.

Ben Habib, chairman of the UK Political Action Committee, told Fox News Digital: “English liberalism is out of control, and it doesn’t matter if it’s not important that sanity is placed aside by allowing people to do what they love.

“Marriage to a cousin was a custom that left Western culture over 100 years ago. It's now back in vengeance. Why? Instead of requesting that we take our approach, we allow us to continue this negative practice.

In one of the legislative debates in the bill, independent MP Iqbal Mohamed, who rejects legislative bans on the marriage of their first cousin, admitted that “the marriage of the first cousin has a health risk.” He said this is an issue that “needs to raise awareness.” However, he said the way to deal with this is not to “prohibit adults from marrying each other.” He does not believe that the ban is “effective or enforceable.”

Health experts say that children in Indigenous marriages are extremely vulnerable to infection with autosomal recessive hereditary disorder.

“The problem needs to be approached as a matter of health awareness and as a cultural issue where women are forced against their willingness to get married,” Mohamed said.

According to Mohamed, an estimated 35% to 50% of all Sahara groups prefer or accept Indigenous marriage, which is common in the Middle East and South Asia. In July 2024, British voters pulled plugs of the Conservative Party's 14-year reign and voted for Left Labour in Priority.
