Skye Roberts, brother of Virginia Giuffre, expressed disappointment on Tuesday regarding President Trump’s comments about potentially pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell, who was a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein.
“It’s hurtful for many survivors. Just hearing about the possibility of a pardon is painful for us as a family. Trump seemed indifferent about it,” Roberts told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki when discussing Trump’s remarks on the issue.
“But why is this even being discussed?” he asked.
Roberts highlighted that Maxwell had been convicted of charges tied to the sexual abuse of minors. Currently, she is serving a 20-year prison sentence, and just this past Monday, the Supreme Court declined to review her 2021 sex trafficking conviction.
“She ran a sex trafficking operation,” he noted. “What message does this send to our children? How can I explain to my daughter what our government stands for? It’s really shameful, very hurtful.”
Roberts mentioned that his sister, who tragically took her own life earlier this year and was a vocal advocate among Epstein’s victims, once believed that Trump would support justice for survivors after he spoke on the topic during his campaign.
“My sister would be devastated by this because we thought he would do the right thing given his campaigning,” Roberts stated. “Now it seems like he and his officials have forgotten about those promises.”
When asked about the possibility of pardoning Maxwell, Trump didn’t firmly rule it out and instead indicated that the matter required further evaluation.
“I haven’t thought about her in a long time. We’ll need to look into it,” Trump mentioned during a speech, referencing a conversation with CNN’s Caitlan Collins.
About the Justice Department, he said, “I’m going to check into it. I’ll consult with the Department of Justice. I’m not sure what I’ll decide.”
A White House official stated, “The White House doesn’t comment on specific pardons.”
“Ultimately, the president is the final authority on pardons.”
