OTISVILLE, N.Y. – Recently shared footage shows two Syrian brown bears at an animal sanctuary enjoying a walk on a frozen pond.
This animal sanctuary, called the Orphan Wildlife Center, is located in the eastern New York town of Otisville.
Video taken at the sanctuary shows one of the residents, a 17-year-old bear named Jenny, licking, scraping and rolling on a frozen pond.
Weighing about 330 pounds, Jenny looks fearless as she tests the ice.
“The ice hadn't been frozen that long, but Jenny was willing to take the risk,” the Orphan Wildlife Center said on YouTube. “When she's jumping on the ice, listen carefully. You can hear the ice cracking and the water splashing underneath.”
Temperatures in Eastern New York have barely been above freezing during the day in recent days, dropping into the single digits and even near 0 degrees at night.
Conservancy officials say Jenny “absolutely” loves snow and loves the winter weather.
They noted that the Syrian brown bear is native to the Middle East and is nearly extinct in the wild.
