Bruce Springsteen’s Surprise Concert Speech in New Jersey
Bruce Springsteen, the legendary rocker from New Jersey, delivered an impassioned speech during an unexpected concert appearance, urging ICE to “get the hell out” of Minneapolis.
The performance took place on Saturday night, where Springsteen entertained fans with an extensive set at a charity event in Red Bank, New Jersey, aimed at supporting Parkinson’s disease research.
At one point during the show, he dedicated his song “The Promised Land,” released in 1978, to Renee Goode. Goode was a 37-year-old mother of three who tragically lost her life due to ICE agents in Minneapolis earlier this month.
“I don’t want to get upset tonight,” said Springsteen, addressing an audience of roughly 1,500 people.
He explained that he wrote “The Promised Land” as a tribute to the potential of America, stating, “This is a story about a beautiful but flawed country: the nation we are and can be.” His remarks emphasized that Americans are “living in incredibly critical times,” stressing that the very values that the country has represented for the last 250 years are currently being tested.
The “Born in the USA” artist encouraged the audience to oppose ICE, echoing calls for the agency to withdraw from Minneapolis. He articulated, “If you believe in the power of the law and that no one is above it; if you stand against heavily armed, masked federal troops invading our cities with Gestapo tactics…”
He continued, insisting that no American should face violence for exercising their right to protest, urging a message to the president: ICE should focus on removing criminals from Minneapolis. This echoed a statement made by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey following Goode’s death.
“This song is in memory of you and Renee Goode,” he added, prompting cheers from the crowd. Reports indicate Goode was shot multiple times during a confrontation between protesters and federal agents on the morning of January 7.
Springsteen has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, often sharing his political views at concerts. In May, he labeled the Trump administration as “incompetent and treasonous” during a performance in Manchester, England.
“Tonight, we ask everyone who believes in democracy and in the best of America’s experiment to join us in speaking out against authoritarianism and making freedom resonate,” Springsteen declared to his audience.
In response, Trump criticized Springsteen, referring to him as “very overrated.” On Truth Social, Trump remarked, “I’ve never liked him, his music, or his radical left politics. He’s just a pushy, obnoxious… individual.”
