Bud Light’s sales plummeted last year after news broke that the company had partnered with transgender influencer and activist Dylan Mulvaney.
Mr. Mulvaney was announced in April as the spokesperson for Bud Light promoting the March Madness basketball tournament, sparking a months-long boycott of the brand.
The trans activist celebrated a milestone in her viral 365 Days of Girlhood series by showing off a Bud Light can with Mulvaney’s face on it, sent by Anheuser-Busch. The influencer detailed her experiences during her first year of identifying as a transgender woman. Tick-tock.
The partnership caused a backlash, and Bud Light’s sales plummeted, resulting in the company no longer being America’s best-selling beer brand.
In addition to the partnership with Mulvaney, Bud Light’s then-vice president of marketing, Alyssa Heinerscheid, shared her thoughts on the brand’s consumers in an interview.
She says what she brings to the brand is “belief” and that evolving and improving means “embracing inclusivity. That means changing the tone, making it truly inclusive and more… “It means running campaigns that are lighter, brighter, different, and appealing.” For both women and men. ”
Heinerscheid suggested that “expression is like the center of evolution, and you have to meet people who see themselves reflected in your work.”
“We were hungover. I mean, Bud Light was kind of a campy, out-of-place brand of humor, so it was really important to have a different approach,” she added.
Mr. Heinerscheidt has reportedly since been fired.
Gillis himself is no stranger to cancel culture. The cartoonist was hired by Saturday Night Live in 2019, but quickly became a hot topic after his old jokes on the podcast resurfaced, with many interpreting them as racist. I was fired.
“After discussions with Shane Gillis, he has decided not to join SNL,” the show said in a statement. mentioned at the time. “We were not aware of his previous statements that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We wish we had seen these clips sooner. We regret that this was not the case and that the review process did not meet our standards.”
Gillis recently appeared On the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he and host Joe Rogan discussed the Dylan Mulvaney tragedy.
“It’s become a joke,” Gillis told Logan. “Marketing-wise, that’s hard to overcome. It’s hard to get people to order Bud Light in public. You’ll get made fun of.”
“No brand has ever been hit this hard,” Logan added.
Todd Allen, Bud Light’s vice president of marketing, told Fox News Digital: “Humor has always been central to the Bud Light brand and is central to our ‘Easy to Enjoy’ platform. We’re excited to join our fan Shane Gillis on his 2024 Live Comedy Tour, which will make it easy to have fun with friends anytime.”
