When it comes to climate change, Joe Biden has accomplished what Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did not. And he, in turn, accomplished what Donald Trump has vowed to destroy.
President Biden is implementing a sophisticated policy strategy that links emissions reductions with job creation, economic growth, and global competitiveness, powered by strong clean energy tax incentives for consumers and businesses.
Just 18 months after securing Congressional approval for this approach, Biden's plan released $370 billion in new private funding. Investing in clean energyand created above 210,000 new clean energy jobs and nearly 50,000 manufacturing jobs. U.S. companies offer dozens of leading clean technologies to consumers while challenging China for global leadership in clean energy. Most important economic sector internationally in the next 20 years, worth $100 trillion that's all.
Mr. Biden also pursued a uniquely ambitious regulatory, security, and foreign policy package to reestablish America's global climate leadership. He correctly characterized climate change. existential crisisis critical to America's long-term domestic security and global security, bringing climate change policy to key levels of government, including emergency responders such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Security Council. He has rallied America's allies around the world to challenge and engage with China, forcing Beijing to: announce new vows.
So Biden is not only the most successful president on climate change, but also the most important climate policy maker in the history of the world.
So how did far-left climate activists respond to such a huge success? To attack Biden.
Never mind that such attacks risk tipping the election to former President Donald Trump's narrow margin. distorted agenda This includes dismantling all the climate protections and economic gains Biden worked so hard to create.
How bad will climate policy be if Trump is re-elected? That would have dire consequences for U.S. security, economic growth, and national security.
From 2017 to 2021, President Trump has undermined every possible climate protection.abolish regulations on power plant pollution; significant increase U.S. greenhouse gas emissions would decline if Biden were not elected to reverse those emissions. President Trump undermined U.S. climate leadership by withdrawing from the Paris climate accord, alienating key allies while encouraging climate detractors like President Vladimir Putin.
But that's nothing compared to what he says he'll do when he returns to the White House.
Donald Trump has made it clear that he will strive to: Eliminate Biden's new clean energy incentives “From day one,” it undermines not only emissions reductions but also the source of hundreds of billions of dollars in new annual investment and hundreds of thousands of new jobs.of Republican frontrunner he says he will “Maximize fossil fuel production” Many new areas will open up for oil drilling. President Trump has gutted virtually all of the climate change regulations introduced by Biden, including blocking U.S. cars and trucks from becoming more fuel efficient, allowing U.S. power plants to pollute more, and overturning rules to reduce methane emissions. He boasts that he plans to do so.
President Trump's allies like the Heritage Foundation, the Office of Loan Programs, which is disbursing $400 billion to help industries decarbonize, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and the Clean Energy Corps. report According to the Financial Times. This is extremely dangerous because most of the Department of Energy's clean energy funding has not yet been injected into the economy.
While all states are investing in clean energy, research shows that red states benefited the most — Many swing states are also large. Private sector clean energy investments Last year, North Carolina had about $11.2 billion, Georgia $6.9 billion, Michigan $5.7 billion and Nevada $5.5 billion.
You would think those on the far left of climate change policy would understand this. But for them, that never seems to be enough. They attack even the best allies like Biden in order to stir up controversy, get media attention, and most importantly, the money that comes with it. And while the “Far Left vs. Biden” storyline may be a bummer for some click-seeking publications, it doesn't represent the real stakes at all going forward. In fact, it turns reality upside down by ignoring important issues.
For example, some climate change activists falsely suggest that natural gas is worse than coal in terms of lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.Starting with this intentionally false premise, it has been grossly misused old data, Then they claim that US natural gas exports are the biggest climate problem.
Indeed, US gas exports are key to limiting Europe's pathological dependence on Russian natural gas. cleaner US gas replace Russian gas has much higher fugitive emissions of methane. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the United States will also reduce the use of coal in the European Union (EU), which has high CO2 emissions. And of course, thanks to US gas, the EU was able to stop filling President Vladimir Putin's coffers and limit funding for Russia's brutal war against Ukraine.
Indeed, the Biden administration has led efforts to reduce methane emissions from gas. The President is on a personal trip to COP 27 in Egypt emphasize what's important The importance of reducing methane emissions to limit short-term temperatures. Last year, Biden issued new regulations to reduce methane emissions from U.S. oil and gas. almost 80 percent, And the administration's landmark climate change bill also included a measure to tax methane emissions from gas and oil that exceed regulated levels. These measures, and new EU rules regulating methane from gas imports, also helped force new commitments from 50 international oil and gas companies to reduce methane leakage at COP 28. Almost zero by 2030creating momentum for a global methane agreement.
Many voters may not realize this despite the propaganda from both the far left and far right attacking Biden. And the lessons of the recent presidential election are surprising. Al Gore lost to George Bush in 2000. Some voters supported far-left Ralph Nader Gore lost Florida by just 537 votes. And in 2016, The Green Party helped elect Trump. By pulling votes away from Hillary Clinton in key states. Now, a new fringe candidate running on the far left could tempt some voters with false characterizations of Biden and the climate. Self-proclaimed climate activists are playing with fire by attacking climate change advocates like Mr. Biden, regardless of whether he delays LNG permits.
Don't get me wrong. Climate is on the ballot. Joe Biden is and will be the only one to protect it.
