The Indiana Fever ended their regular season on a disappointing note, losing to the Minnesota Lynx by 20 points, which didn’t exactly instill confidence going into the playoffs. Unfortunately, their playoff opener on Sunday didn’t provide much reason for optimism either.
In the first game of their best-of-three series, the Las Vegas Aces dominated, finishing with a 102-85 victory over Indiana.
Fans had hoped for a strong start after Indiana had managed to beat the defending champions earlier in the season. But, from the moment the game started, Las Vegas took charge, building a lead of up to 27 points, which left Indiana struggling to catch up for most of the second half.
Las Vegas was bolstered by the impressive performance of A’ja Wilson, who is a strong contender for MVP. She shone on both sides of the court, racking up 38 points and 16 rebounds. Yet, the bigger narrative was Indiana’s struggles to penetrate a disciplined Aces defense.
The Fever’s backcourt fought against constant traps and double teams, which really hampered their offensive flow. Caitlin Clark managed to secure a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, but her shooting was hindered; she hit only 6 of 18 attempts, including three from beyond the arc, while also accumulating six turnovers and five fouls. Kelsey Mitchell faced similar issues, scoring just 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
With their main playmakers struggling, Indiana found it difficult to keep up with the Aces’ firepower. Aliyah Boston was the standout for the Fever, leading with 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Sophie Cunningham came off the bench to inject some energy into the team, contributing 13 points with three three-pointers. While she provided a spark during a tough second half, it wasn’t enough to seriously challenge Las Vegas.
As the series moves to Indianapolis for Game 2 on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Fever will need to rally and protect their home court if they want to keep their season alive and force a decisive Game 3.
