Phillies’ Wheeler Declines All-Star Game Invitation

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler recently opted out of participating in the MLB All-Star Game, even after receiving a last-minute invitation to join the lineup.

At first, Wheeler was unable to play at his home stadium, Citizens Bank Ballpark, due to his pitching schedule. These schedules often dictate who gets selected for the All-Star Game, though it’s not entirely clear how strictly they govern the selection process.

He was invited as an injury replacement on a Friday but turned it down, feeling that he “wouldn’t be the fifth option.” Wheeler expressed his frustration, stating, “Because they disrespected me, so I’m not going to be a part of that.”

While he acknowledged that attending the event would be a “privilege,” Wheeler made it clear that he wasn’t criticizing the event itself. It was the initial snub that bothered him.

“Everyone is so proud to have an All-Star next to their name,” he shared, emphasizing the long-term significance of that accolade for players. “It’s not the best feeling for someone to take that away from me.”

Wheeler is currently under contract with the Phillies for the season. So far, he has started 14 games and boasts an impressive 2.28 ERA, with 98 strikeouts and a 10.1 K/9 rate.

He hinted on Tuesday that his pitching schedule is what’s keeping him off the mound. “That disappoints me. That’s kind of BS,” he added. “I feel like I’ve earned it, and just because I pitched on a certain day doesn’t mean I can’t pitch in the All-Star Game and get recognized for it.”

In his view, the rule that penalizes players based on their specific pitching days seems unfair. “I think it’s just like a BS rule. You pitch on a certain day and you get punished,” he remarked.
