Caitlin Clark’s Incident During WNBA Game Leads to Suspension
Alyssa Thomas has been suspended for one game after a controversial incident involving WNBA star Caitlin Clark, who was struck in the throat while players scrambled for a loose ball. This event elicited significant outrage, as reported by Garrett Tenney. Political analyst Janno Caldwell addressed Clark’s substantial effect on WNBA viewership, referencing her lucrative $2.2 billion contract and examining the implications of gender and race in the situation.
Sophie Cunningham, a former player for the Phoenix Mercury, has been vocal about her thoughts during a recent episode of her podcast, Show Me Something. The Mercury have come under scrutiny following Thomas’ rough foul on Clark, which some are calling unacceptable.
The foul went uncalled at first, but the WNBA later reviewed the play, upgrading it to a Flagrant 2. Thomas ultimately received a suspension. Interestingly, the Mercury had previously referenced the incident in a now-deleted social media post.
Cunningham, expressing her support for Clark, remarked that “nobody” seems to favor the Mercury this season. She mentioned that within her organization, colleagues have expressed their discontent, suggesting the team has a reputation for being unfriendly.
However, Cunningham’s comments have sparked backlash from WNBA reporter Megan L. Hall, who argued that such opinions should be kept private. Hall criticized the public nature of Cunningham’s remarks, questioning their appropriateness and effectiveness in the current dialogue.
Furthermore, Cunningham has faced other controversies, including being mentioned in a lawsuit regarding an alleged relationship with Phoenix Suns and Mercury CEO Josh Bartelstein, which she has denied.
The Fever and Mercury are set to meet again on July 9, but Clark’s participation in that game is uncertain due to ongoing issues following the incident.
