Caleb Downs Faces Backlash After Buckeyes’ Win Against Penn State

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Caleb Downs encountered criticism following his team’s continued undefeated season with a decisive victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday.

The controversial moment took place during the fourth quarter of the Buckeyes’ 38-14 win. Penn State quarterback Ethan Glankmeier connected with wide receiver Khalil Dinkins when Downs, lowering his head, seemingly struck Dinkins with the top of his helmet.

Fans were calling for a targeting penalty that could have resulted in an ejection for Downs. While officials ruled there was no targeting, they did flag him for unnecessary roughness. Upon hearing this, Downs seemed incredibly relieved.

Later, he seized an opportunity during the game to make an interception. He reflected on this by saying, “God gave it to me on the spot. I really appreciate the moment they showed me mercy.”

On social media, many expressed their frustrations regarding the lack of a targeting call. Despite the controversy, Downs had a solid game, making five tackles—one of which was for a loss.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sane had an impressive performance, completing 20 of 23 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receivers Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith also shone, both surpassing 120 receiving yards—with Tate scoring once and Smith twice.

With this victory, Ohio State improved to 8-0 for the season, while Penn State’s record dropped to 3-5, continuing their winless streak against Big Ten opponents.
