On Thursday, the governor’s office announced it would increase the strength of California’s National Guard county drug task forces from 155 to nearly 400 personnel.
The increased deployment comes amid an influx of illegal fentanyl smuggling, with the California National Guard helping to seize more than 5.8 million fentanyl pills so far this year.
Newsom released a video on Thursday about his decision, in which he blamed Republican lawmakers for a lack of resources at the border.
California initially launched the task force in 2022 with just 30 members.
