California camper and his dog Mud rescued after being trapped in deep snow for several days

A dog became trapped in mud while snow surrounded it.

On Wednesday, heavy machinery was called in to help rescue a camper and his dog, Mad, who were caught in deep snow outside Big Bear.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department dispatched a snowcat to assist the man, as several feet of snow had fallen in the Holcomb Valley, rendering the area inaccessible by foot. Officials mentioned he was in the wilderness for quite some time, traversing “several miles.”

Video captured by the department showed a Snowcat 96 navigating the snowy terrain, locating a man and his dog near their vehicle.

“With the snowmobile’s assistance, we’re going to get this guy home safe to his family,” stated Captain Anthony Muscarello from the San Bernardino County Fire Department in the footage.

Although the man had been stranded for several days, authorities noted he had ample food, water, and supplies.

Upon arrival, the rescuers found the dog dressed in a snug coat and hat. They soon brought the dog into a treadmill and made their way back to safety.

The SBCFD highlighted that even seasoned outdoor adventurers can face unexpected challenges when winter weather changes rapidly. They shared that this particular camper had been exploring near Holcomb Valley, just a few miles off the Pacific Crest Trail, when he got stuck in over three feet of snow.

The department wrapped up their message with thanks for the positive resolution of the incident and emphasized the importance of planning, carrying necessary supplies, and checking the weather before heading out on an adventure.
