Union representatives confirmed on Friday that a farm worker died due to injuries from an immigration enforcement raid at a cannabis farm in California. This incident was tragic, as it highlights the dangers faced during such operations.
The raid took place on Thursday, where federal agents engaged with protesters at Glasshouse Farm in Camarillo, with confrontations escalating. Authorities used tear gas to break up the crowd, and video footage captured the chaos of the scene.
Interestingly, US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott mentioned that the Camarillo farm had ten minor immigrants, eight of whom were unaccompanied. Glasshouse is currently being scrutinized for potential child labor violations.
Scott even pointed out, “This is Newsom’s California,” which might indicate some political undercurrents at play. Concerns regarding the handling of these operations have been raised.
Reports note that the Trump administration’s raids in Southern California target undocumented immigrants, even facing pushback from local authorities. The union criticized the raid, describing it as a “chaotic attack” that left workers in serious distress.
In a statement, a union representative expressed that these federal actions have induced fear within communities, disrupted food supply chains, and threatened lives, while often ignoring legal protections for many working in agriculture.
