California college has only one pro-Palestinian protester because city is blue-collar and conservative, political science prof says

As pro-Palestinian protesters disrupt universities across the country, one higher education institution in California was able to rally just one demonstrator to its cause.

That’s because California State University, Bakersfield, is too blue-collar and too conservative, says a political science professor.

“This is primarily a blue-collar school, and the students are more interested in getting a degree and moving on with their lives than anything else,” CSUB professor Mark Martinez said. Go to KGETTV.

The Cal-State system is specifically designed to serve students who live in California and can attend classes from the comfort of their home.

“This is also basically a commuter school, and that influences the campus culture and therefore the tendency for activism,” he explained.

“Bakersfield is a conservative city and that plays a role,” Martinez added.

KGET spoke to a lone protester on campus holding a poster of the Palestinian flag.

“My daughter is protesting at UCLA, so I didn’t know if Bakersfield would participate, but I thought I’d do something anyway,” said Carolyn Lane, an adjunct instructor. participate. “

She said her 10-year-old daughter drew Palestinian posters for the protests.

“I thought it was better for even one person to protest than not to protest at all,” she added.

Freshman Brayan Garcia told KGET that students at the school have no intention of protesting.

“They don’t like to make too much noise. I mean, we don’t have a football team to begin with,” Garcia said.

Martinez went on to list another reason why students are not motivated to protest against Israel.

“I think the relatively low level of interest in study abroad programs is a contributing factor. Study abroad is an important program because it promotes understanding of world events and ideas. “I just think it’s a luxury that I don’t have in my time or my money,” he added.

The campus remained relatively calm, but after the report aired, more pro-Hamas protesters protesters showed Go to university. Officials said protesters had organized an hour-long rally.

CSU System said in a statement that it does not intend to make any changes to its investments in connection with the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Bakersfield is a city of approximately 400,000 people located in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 113 miles north of Los Angeles.
